Twenty Years of Service.
A Career That Built an Institute.

José Edilso Monroy Canon was born in Colombia and entered the Colombian National Army in 1997, beginning a military career that would span more than two decades of active operational service. From the earliest years of his enlistment, Monroy Canon distinguished himself through consistent operational excellence, earning formal commendations at a rate that placed him among the most decorated non-commissioned officers in his branch.

His specialization in cavalry operations and counter-guerrilla doctrine placed him at the front lines of Colombia's most complex security challenges, the same environments where U.S. national security interests were most directly engaged under Plan Colombia and the broader framework of U.S.-Colombia bilateral defense cooperation. Over two decades, Monroy Canon accumulated firsthand operational experience in counter-insurgency, counter-narcotics, asymmetric warfare, and platoon-level command that no classroom, textbook, or secondary source can replicate.

"The most durable contributions to national security come not from abstraction, but from the hard-won lessons of operational reality. AADI was founded to make those lessons available, in structured, professional form, to the institutions that need them most."

Throughout his active service, Monroy Canon was trained under U.S.-co-developed military doctrine at the Escuela de Sargentos Inocencio Chinca, as part of the Plan Colombia bilateral security framework. His professional formation was shaped by the leadership frameworks codified in FUTCO Vol. XI, a manual co-developed between the Colombian National Army and U.S. Army doctrine specialists, in which 51.6% of leadership content was co-authored with U.S. Army generals and published by Editorial Planeta Colombiana in 2016.

That same year, he was awarded the Presidential Citation of Military Victory by Decree No. 1470, signed by General Alberto José Mejía Ferrero, Commander General of the Colombian Armed Forces. This citation, Colombia's highest recognition of distinguished operational service, was the capstone of a career already marked by 42 formal commendations, five Good Conduct Stripes, a Cavalry Intermediate Training Certificate with Excellent Results, and zero disciplinary sanctions from enlistment to retirement.

Following his honorable retirement in 2017 as Sergeant First Class, Monroy Canon relocated to Florida and founded the Allied Americas Defense Institute to formalize and deliver the advisory, research, and training services that translate his career's documented expertise into institutional value for U.S. security stakeholders.

Why AADI Was Founded

Turning a Career of Service Into Institutional Value

The Allied Americas Defense Institute was not founded as an abstract policy organization. It was founded because a specific gap exists, between the irreplaceable operational knowledge that more than two decades of front-line service produces, and the government agencies, academic institutions, and private sector organizations that urgently need access to that knowledge.

No domestic labor market candidate possesses firsthand experience in Plan Colombia-era counter-narcotics operations, Colombian National Army cavalry command, or training under doctrine co-developed with U.S. Army advisors. AADI's founder does. AADI was built to make that expertise available, structured, and professionally delivered.

  • Founded AADI in Florida, 2025, to formalize advisory services grounded in documented military expertise
  • Trained under U.S.-co-developed Colombian National Army doctrine throughout active service
